At the turn of the century, Des Moines was expanding rapidly and sought additional cemetery space. In 1886, the city acquired 190 acres of farmland "out west of town" for $200 per acre. The land, intended for a cemetery, was initially unsuitable due to its rugged terrain, large boulders, and sparse oak trees. Funerals required a day’s journey by horse and carriage over rough land. Despite these challenges, the land was eventually developed into a usable cemetery site.
