Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, established in 1902 by William H. Locke Jr., is a historic, non-sectarian cemetery located in Farmingdale, New York. Spanning over 500 acres, it is renowned for its meticulously maintained gardens, flowing fountains, and diverse arboreal collections, earning it the moniker “The Park of Many Gardens.” One of the park’s most notable features is the Statue of Peace, a massive bronze sculpture originally housed in the grand dining room of the French ocean liner Normandie. After the ship’s tragic fire and capsizing in 1942, the statue was salvaged and eventually found its home in Pinelawn’s Garden of Normandie. In 2024, Pinelawn achieved the distinction of becoming the first cemetery in the United States to be certified as a “Certified Audubon Classic Sanctuary” by Audubon International.
